What Do You Get When You Have Spirit Airlines, 15 Inches Of Snow And A Goofball Like Me
Dateline: Los Angeles
Yep...I'm in California. Got here Tuesday. Bit of an adventure but I made it....and yeah it's warm here. Sweet.
I've had this trip planned since October.
Bought a ticket on Spirit Airlines for $115. How can you beat that? Keep reading.
It's Tuesday morning, February 3. My plane leaves at 11am. I figure if I leave for the airport at 8, I'm good. Oh yeah, did I mention that Chicago was buried under 15 inches of snow? Just a small point,
I leave at 8:30...just a little late...no biggie. Yeah, right.
Back to that snow...have you ever tried to carry a suitcase through 15 inches of snow? As I'm writing this, it occurs to me I could have taken a cab to the train for less than 10 bucks!
SCHMUCK!
I get to the airport. Still 90 minutes to catch the flight. No problem. Then I saw the check-in line. Problem.
It was full of people who have been trying to escape Chicago for two days. I said to no one "This seemed like a good idea four months ago." Lots of nodding heads.
Finally get to check-in...then it's off to security. No problem! Still 45 minutes to blast off.
This line is moving slower. It might be better if we all just got naked and went through...okay maybe not.
Back to Spirit Airlines...what airline doesn't have monitors to tell you the status of your flight? The same one that doesn't have a toll-free number. Yep...Spirit.
So no one in line knows when their flight is leaving. Is everyone stressed? Pffft!!
I finally get to the front and there's 10 minutes to take-off. It's going to be close. It didn't help that I had $5 in change in my pocket. Why? Shrugging shoulders.
SCHMUCK!
I get through security and have three minutes to get to Gate 7.
Remember O.J. Simpson running through the airport in the Hertz commercial? Hmmm...maybe I should have left at 8am?
I get to the gate and everyone is sitting around. Flight delayed. Moved to another gate. Departure time....unknown...it's Spirit!
We changed gates two more times and finally it's go time.
I'm talking with two guys who look tired and dirty. They've been at O'Hare since Sunday. Perspective.
I get on the plane. I have an aisle seat. The chairs don't recline. The tray tables are the size of my laptop keyboard. And you can buy popcorn and a drink for about $10...just like the movies...oh yeah...no movies.
We got to L.A, about an hour late. So what...no big deal.
Picked up by my daughter at LAX and we spent the day together. Talking, dinner, ice cream. the most time we've spent alone together in a few years....and that was the point of coming here. Reconnections!!!
This is the Pacific Ocean in Santa Monica. Looking at the water with my daughter, Amy, who took the photo. Not a bad spot to end the day. Was it worth the hassle?
