What kind of loser contacts the LPGA office to report a rules violation?
It's Sunday afternoon. The first weekend in April. A lovely Spring day. Someone, somewhere is kicking back and enjoying the last of their weekend with a little Golf. The LPGA. Women's Golf.
It's a big tournament for the LPGA. One of their majors. It's held around this time each year in the California desert. The Palm Springs area. It used to be called the Dinah Shore tournament but Dinah's been dead for some time and now it has some corporate title like 90% of all Golf tournaments.
I can't make fun of someone for watching Golf. I watched a little Golf myself yesterday...and by watch I mean it was on my tv while I was in my bed with my eyes closed. But I can make fun of that person for calling/emailing/texting the LPGA offices to report an apparent rules violation.
Apparently this person saw golfer Lexi Thompson mark her ball incorrectly. You know he/she is playing this scene back and forth, over and over, in slow motion, looking for the smallest most minuscule thing. And when they found this, their thought process was I need to do something about this. Who should I call? So it was off to tell the LPGA. NEENERS!!!
C'mon...what kind of person does this? The kind that tells the teacher about passing notes in first grade. The kind that tells the teacher about someone peeking at their algebra quiz paper in high school. The kind that smells marijuana coming from a house a block away and calls the cops. YEAH!! That person!!
For some reason the Golf associations take these reports seriously. This isn't their first rodeo with this. It happens a few time a year...every year. This won't be the last time we hear about this in 2017.
Even though the discretion occurred on Saturday, LPGA decided to assess a four shot penalty to Thompson. FOUR SHOTS...and they told her in the middle of her round. She went from a big lead to trailing. Lexi Thompson eventually lost the tournament in a playoff.
She took this a lot better than I would have. I would have walked off the course in protest when told of the penalty (easy to say this from afar). Lexi, while visibly shaken and through tears, said all the right things. You know...rules are rules, etc...yada yada yada.
Somewhere in America, some person is patting themselves on the back for their decision. They think they turned a wrong into a right, made the Golf world better and helped to change lives. In reality, most of us sees them as a big loser wearing a big L on their forehead.
