What Should You Watch On New Year's Day Besides Football.

Hope you all had something better to do than watch the Google numbers dance their way into 2015.

So now it's New Year's Day and hopefully the hangovers are clearing up. You're settling in and getting ready to watch some Football. There are five games on today. FIVE!!!  Combine those with the dozens of other bowl games the last ten days and it's big time Football overload...big time!!

I like to mix it up by watching some music. For years this has been my go to New Year's Day movie... The Last Waltz.

I've been watching this on New Year's for the last 10 years. I think it's the greatest 'concert' film ever made. The combination of interviews with The Band and their music is unsurpassed. I highly recommend this film.

But...I'm making a change for 2015.

I'm trying to be flexible plus I'm pissed off at Robbie Robertson, which I know will totally ruin his day, so here are some more options.

 I love George Harrison. This 1971 event set the stage for all future charity concerts. The extras on this film include some great interviews with Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Billy Preston and Ravi Shankar.

Then there's the music...all of the above plus great sets by Leon Russell and Bob Dylan. The guitar duel between Harrison and Clapton on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is brilliant.

The Concert For George was a tribute to Harrison done on November 29, 2002, one year after his death.

It features many of the same players that were at the Bangladesh gig plus Paul McCartney, Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty...all playing music from Harrison's Beatles and solo career. Highlights include McCartney/Clapton on "Something", Ringo singing "Photograph" and a skit by Monty Python.

It closes with a moving version of "I'll See You In My Dreams" by legendary British entertainer, Joe Brown.

Two hours of great entertainment...much better than watching Auburn vs Wisconsin....MUCH BETTER!!

 But this is my choice for today. "Roy Orbison and Friends: A Black and White Night".

This concert was filmed in September 1987 at the famed Cocoanut Grove nightclub, in Los Angeles. Among the performers backing him up are Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, k.d. lang and Bonnie Raitt.

The music includes almost every Orbison hit you can name and as the title says, it's done in Black and White. It just has a real Orbison feel to it, really cool. Roy Orbison died about a year after this concert so this is one of his last big shows.

Plus it has to be better than watching Missouri vs Minnesota...I mean cmon...really?!

You can't go wrong watching any of these great music events but here's a little bit of Roy to whet your appetite.
