What will I write about when Donald Trump is gone?
It was March 6, 2016. That was the day I wrote about Donald Trump for the first time. He was coming to Chicago for a rally and "Donald Trump doesn't scare me" was a preview of the rally. A few days later, it was rally time. I wrote "Happy Trump Day" as a satirical look at what I thought would happen that night. Who knew what I thought was satire would actually come true? After the rally was canceled because Trump was too much of a pussy (just using what is now Don's favorite word) to show, "A Day with the Donald" was a comedic recap of the events of the previous day.
At the time of the Chicago rally, his campaign hadn't really taken off. There was no guarantee that he was going to be the Republican candidate, much less win the election and become president. That Chicago non-rally seemed to get what would become his base excited and mobilized. Sadly, they became excited and mobilized enough to get him into the White House for the last four years.
Looking back almost five years, I figured those pieces about him were one-offs. I had no idea he was going to dominate my life and my writing. I had no idea I was going to write about him more than two hundred times. TWO HUNDRED!!! I knew it was a lot. I knew the number was large, but until just now I had no idea what it was. Damn! TWO HUNDRED!!!
Donald Trump's brand of insanity was on display every day. Breaking news was a regular occurrence. By regular, I mean multiple times every single day! And then there were his Twitter rants. And then there was his dysfunctional family. All of this and more drew me in. They made it easy to fill up a blank screen with words. And every time it felt like it was enough, or actually, too much, they did something else that resulted in more words. As I mentioned in the previous paragraph, two hundred damn pages of words.
By tomorrow at this time, Donald Trump and his family will be gone from Washington. Joe Biden will soon be the new President of the United States. One of the reasons I became a Biden supporter is he seems normal. Every day will not have breaking news. The politics will become quiet, or at least less noisy...a lot less noisy. Every news event will not lead to a new blog post. There will be a lot fewer words on blank pages.
And I thrilled about this! I'm happy not only for myself but for the entire United States of America!
But, with Don being gone, what the hell am I going to write about? What's next? SIGH!
Honestly, I'm not exactly sure. Even without him, there's still plenty of things going on in the world and in my brain. I guess we'll figure that out as we move forward. One day at a time. I look forward to that. It was a good run, but I look forward to never writing about Donald Trump again.
