When A Parkie Says Dinners On Me, He Really Means
The title is a quote from Michael J. Fox about the challenges of eating while dealing with Parkinson's Disease. Until recently I thought it was only me!
I eat with a group of people on a regular basis. All of them know I have PD. "How long until Howie spills something on his shirt?" "You think spaghetti is a good choice?" It's good natured but it's true. They've seen plenty of stained shirts....plenty.
I asked my Facebook PD groups about this. It's pretty unanimous.
Adeline Evans "I'm trying to find a way to eat in the shower."
I'm not going that far but I get it (btw I know she's not eating in the shower, are you Adeline?).
A couple of weeks ago I decided I needed a new sweater. I found a nice one. Light weight, green, perfect for fall.
Wore it for the first time the next day. Jumped on a bus with a drink. You can see where this is going, right? The bus stopped suddenly, the drink went flying. I did mange to catch the bottle but liquid was flying....and landing...on my green sweater.
I know...I know...I bought the sweater at a thrift shop for 67 cents but that's not the point.
Claude Deems "I stabbed a ravioli a little too hard. Ended up with half on the table, half on my shirt. I take my PD seriously, but not so much myself."
That's the attitude you really need to have about this. What are you going to do, eat without a shirt on? Restaurants don't really like that.
Oh yeah...that's another thing. Us Parkies tend to avoid restaurants. It's embarrassing.
Yanno what...get over yourself. Are you going to stay at home the rest of your life? There are lot worse things than spilling something on your clothes.
This is a Parkinson's patients best friend. Buy it in the extra, extra large size. You're going to need a lot of it!!
