Who did it worse: The Chicago Bears drafting and developing quarterbacks or Chicago voters electing Mayors?
The Chicago Bears football team got their man! They made a trade to move up in the NFL draft and were able to draft the quarterback that will lead them into the future....again. Super Bowl here we come...again.
Nothing against Justin Fields, in fact, I'm excited to see him come to Chicago...and I'm not a big fan of the team or the NFL (I'm more of a college football guy). If I'm excited, you can imagine how jazzed the hardcore Bears fan must be feeling.
One of those hardcore fans is the current Chicago Mayor, Lori Lightfoot. After the huge trade to get Fields, Lori let us know how she was feeling with this Tweet: "We got our QB! Welcome to Chicago, Justin."
Hopefully Ms. Lightfoot is correct, but knowing the history of quarterbacks in Bear uniforms, it's just as likely that he'll bomb out instead of leading the Bears to the promised land.
In actuality, you can compare the success of Bears signal callers to the amount of success that Mayors of Chicago have had in the last five or so decades. You don't buy it? Check out this list:
Chicago Bears QB's:
Mitch Trubisky, Mike Glennon, Jay Cutler, Rex Grossman, Kyle Orton, Cade McNown, Jim Harbaugh, Jim McMahon, Vince Evans, Bob Avellini, Mike Phipps and Bobby Douglas.
That goes back to the late 1960's. Pretty sad list, isn't it. If you want to find a Hall of Fame player, you need to go back to Sid Luckman, whose last season was in 1948.
Now let's look at Chicago's Mayors:
Richard J. Daley, Mike Bilandic, Jayne Byrne, Harold Washington, Richard M. Daley, Rahm Emanuel and Lori Lightfoot.
Wow! That list is may be as bad as the above list of quarterbacks. It doesn't paint a good picture for Chicago football executives or Chicago voters, does it? So, who did it worse? Should we call it a tie?
One thing the two groups do have in common is they all enter with hope and optimism and they all leave sadly in disgrace and disillusionment.
So good luck to Justin Fields. Hopefully, you're the guy who can break this streak of football losers. I know Lori Lightfoot has your back...at least for now. We said the same thing about her when she was elected two years ago. Look how that is turning out.
