Who do you trust?
Remember Johnny Carson? Of course, you do! He was and remains the greatest late-night host of all time. But do you remember what he did before The Tonight Show? He hosted a game show. "Who Do You Trust" ran with Carson as the host from 1957 to 1962.
"Who Do You Trust" was a quiz show that featured three couples. The basics of the game were that Johnny would ask the male member of the couple a question; the man would then decide whether to answer it himself or trust his wife to get the answer correct.
Big bucks were at stake. The questions were worth $25, $50 or $75. Like I said, big bucks.
It's now fifty-nine years since the end of the series, but I feel like we're playing the game again. It happens every time you walk out the door and head out into public.
In the last week, our government health officials have decided that if you've been vaccinated, you can walk around without wearing a mask. If you go for a walk, no mask. If you go to the grocery store, no mask. The beach, a park, a restaurant, the baseball game...if you've been shot up, then you can safely lose that mask.
That's great....sorta. Breathing is much easier to do without wearing a mask. Most physical activities are better mask-less. I'm ready to go....sorta.
I just have one small question....Who do I trust?
When I go for a walk, how do I know that the person walking next to me without a mask has been vaccinated? If I go to a restaurant, how do I know the person sitting next to me in the bar has been vaccinated? If I go to Target, how do I know my fellow shopper has been vaccinated? If I go to Wrigley Field and sit in the special cheap ticket all-vaccinated section, how do I know everyone packed in has really been vaccinated?
I could go on and on and on, but you get the point. I know we aren't going to be asking people for their vaccination passports. It looks like we're on the honor system now. I guess if we see someone cruising in public without wearing a mask, we have to trust that they have been vaccinated. But are we really that trusting? If so, or even if not, who can we trust? Who do you trust?
Oh man....where is Johnny Carson when you need him?
