Why Are White Sox Fans Snarky About The Cubs?
2005
Whenever you have a conversation about the Cubs with a White Sox fan you can be sure you'll hear that number.
2005
Yep. It was ten years ago when the White Sox won the World Series. By the way a Sox fan talks, you'd think it was last year...hell...last month.
By now I'm sure you know that the Chicago Cubs are going to the playoffs. It may be for only one game but still, it's the playoffs. It's been seven years since the last time the Cubs were there and they're coming off some bad years. They're historically bad years and that says a lot when you're talking about the Cubs. So even if it's one game and done, there are plenty of reasons to celebrate this team.
The funny thing about talking baseball with a Sox fan is when you're done, you'd think the White Sox were the New York Yankees. Hey White Sox fans, guess what? They aren't...not even close. In fact, historically, they aren't even as good as the Cubs.
Here are the numbers...The Sox have won three World Series, have won 5 American League pennants and a total of nine playoff appearances. NINE!!
Lets look at The Cubs. They've won two World Series, have won 10 National league pennants and have a total of sixteen playoff appearances. SIXTEEN!!
Yeah but there's still 2005.
I know...I know....many of the Cubs numbers are in the past....the distant past...the far distant past. So let's get somewhat current. Let's go back to 1969 when the playoffs first expanded. The White Sox have five playoff appearances. The Cubs now have seven.
2005.
Talking about 2005, since then the Sox have been to the playoffs once. This will be the Cubs third time since then. Even in a ten year period that includes some of the worst Cub teams ever, they've still been to the playoffs three times as often as the South Siders.
So what's the point of this?
First off, if you're a Sox fan and you think you're passing on new information, then you're silly. We're Cub fans. We know our team has sucked the last 70 or so years. We know about 1908. Really...we know, we know, WE KNOW!!!
Second, your team sucks, too...probably worse than you thought.
Third, for Cub fans this has been a great season. Totally unexpected. We knew they'd be better but we figured this was still a year or two away. Everything from this point on is gravy. The Cubs haven't won enough in our lifetime to be jaded about this. We can celebrate and enjoy this. It's a good thing. Mentioning 2005 or how the Cubs have lost their last nine postseason games or how we should be prepared to have our hearts broken again shouldn't ruin this. Hopefully in five years, after a bunch more playoff runs, we'll be disappointed by a post-season failure...not this time.
Back to 2005. Congrats on that win. It was a great victory by a really good team. It was good to see a Chicago team win a baseball championship. I'm happy you all got one and happier your relatives got to see one before they died and all that sentimental, nostalgic crap. But it's now 2015. As us Cub fans have been told season after season after season after season.... Wait til next year.
I rarely get a chance to write about Sports but I've been a Cubs fan for more than 50 years. It's been quite a change in fortune since I wrote this about winning a world series before I die.
