It’s Grammy night in America! Usually that means folks of my age group complain about how the entire three hours is filled with artists we've never heard of. Not tonight! The list of nominees is filled with names that even most of the Boomer generation is familiar with.
The big story is can Taylor Swift win another Best Album Grammy? She already has three of them, which ties her for the most in this category. It's a heady list of those at the top—Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon—all legends in the music world.
Swift’s album “Midnights” has received nearly unanimous excellent reviews. I also like it, but I don’t think it’s on the same level as her last Grammy winning album, “Folklore.” I also think the competition for this year’s award is extremely strong. Three albums that I thought were better than “Midnights” are boygenius “The Record”, Olivia Rodrigo “Guts” and Miley Cyrus “Endless Summer Vacation.” You also can’t discount Jon Batiste, a popular musical figure who swept the Grammys with his last album. However, the one album that a lot of experts think can stop Taylor from a record-breaking night is “SOS”, by Sza.
The one thing that Taylor Swift does have on her competition is her world-wide popularity. Yes, the others have more than their share of fans but nothing like Swift does through her record-breaking Eras tour; not to mention her current public romance with Kansas City Chiefs star player Travis Kelce.
Will all of this be enough for Taylor Swift to make history tonight? Will she pass Frank, Stevie and Paul? We’ll find out in a few hours.
Before I read this piece, I was planning to watch the Grammys tonight and see who won. Now I guess I'll just watch the Grammys tonight and see who wins.
