Would we really miss Texas if they actually seceded from the United States
Texas is back! At least that's what we've heard every fall for the last decade or so. Of course, that's what their state university's college football team has been saying. The state itself and some of its residents, well not quite as much. They're talking about leaving.
It started early last week. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a suit trying to get the Supreme Court of the United States to throw out the results of the presidential election in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Arizona and Georgia. Apparently there was massive voter fraud in those states...no where else. He found seventeen other Attorney's General to sign on to the suit. Now I'm not sure Ken really believed any of this or if he was only trying to suck up to the current lame-duck president. See, Ken has some federal legal issues going on, such as abuse of office and bribery. He heard that lame-duck Don is giving out pardons like they were Halloween candy. Maybe doing this could help keep himself out of prison. Yeah, I know that sounds cynical, but welcome to 2020 Trump-world.
On Friday, the suit made its way to Washington, where it took about ten minutes for the Supremes to issue a ruling. It took only one page, yes less than the length of this blog post, for the case to get a huge thumbs down. Depending on how you interpret it, the vote was either 7-2 or 9-love. Not even any of the Trump appointed three stooges could be persuaded to vote for the case to be heard. You'd think that Amy C-B would be more grateful, wouldn't you.
So the case is history and normal life can go on....or so you would think. But then we heard from the chairman of the Republican party of Texas, Allen West:
“The Supreme Court, in tossing the Texas lawsuit that was joined by seventeen states and 106 US congressman (sic), have decreed that a state can take unconstitutional actions and violate its own election law. Resulting in damaging effects on other states that abide by the law, while the guilty state suffers no consequences. This decision establishes a precedent that says states can violate the US constitution and not be held accountable. This decision will have far reaching ramifications for the future or our constitutional republic. Perhaps law-abiding states should bond together and form a Union of states that will abide by the constitution.”
Most of his statement is blah, blah, blah, so let's ignore that and focus on the last sentence. Once again: "Perhaps law-abiding states should bond together and form a Union of states that will abide by the constitution.”
I don't care about most of those seventeen states. Do we give a damn about Wyoming, Arkansas and even though I attended college there, Oklahoma? Nope! But Texas is one of the largest states, both in size and population. There may be things about it that we would would miss.
Would we miss any of their cites being part of the union? Dallas? They have America's most hated sports team in the Cowboys, plus they killed JFK. So we're good with them being gone. Houston? The Astros cheated their way to a World Series title. They're hated, too. So long! San Antonio? We don't have to go there. We can just remember the Alamo! Austin? This is the tough one. One of the best music cities in what is now the United States. We'd lose them, but we'd also lose the much hated Texas Longhorns. It's a wash! Bye!!
The truly great thing about Texas seceding would be some of their politicians who we'd be losing: Louie Gohmert- A man who voted against making lynching a federal crime. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick- Who during the pandemic said that older Americans should die to protect the economy. Ken Paxton- He started all this nonsense with a lawsuit that couldn't get a hearing from a packed in his favor Supreme Court. Ted Cruz- A man who is such a suck-up wuss that he wouldn't stand up to a fool that insulted his wife and father. A guy who always tries to show he's the smartest person in the room and usually makes a fool of himself doing so. A dude who even the Republicans in the Senate dislike.
Hmmm....just losing Cruz with be worth losing Texas!
So Texas leaving the United States doesn't sound so bad, does it? To my friends, family and everyone else in Texas who want to start a new country, hope you have your passports ready when you want to come visit us Americans, in the real United States. If you folks really want to leave, I won't hold it against you. In fact I encourage it! Good luck to all of you. I can't wait to hear the name of your new country. I imagine it'll be clever and brilliant like the rest of your state's leaders. See ya...and don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out.
