Would you take a test that let you know you might be at risk for Parkinson's or Alzheimer's?
If there was a way to know that you were genetically at risk for Parkinson's Disease would you want to know? What about for Alzheimer's/Dementia?
Now there is a way to find out. For $200, you can get a kit, put in a saliva sample, send it back and you'll receive the results that will tell you if there's a possibility that you can get these two diseases plus eight others. It is NOT a diagnosis. It just lets you know if you are genetically at risk.
My question is, if you found out getting a disease was a possibility, would you live your life any differently? To answer my own question, I have no idea. If I knew in my 30's that I was going to get PD twenty-five years later, I may have started to eat better and exercise more but I doubt I would have made extreme lifestyle changes.
Below is the NBC Nightly News story that talks about the test that was recently approved by the FDA:
April is Parkinson's Disease Awareness Month. PD doesn't play favorites. It affects people from all walks of life. Tomorrow, I'll have a gallery of people in the arts that have Parkinson's Disease. Here's a post I wrote almost four years ago. A list of things that are harder to do with Parkinson's.
